After three long years of endless negotiations and lots of Sam Zell being an asshole the Tribune Company is finally no longer in charge of the Chicago Cubs. The Ricketts family took over officially today with their introductory press conference during which they outlines various plans for the team next season and in the future.
Those hoping that Ricketts would come in and do something cool like lower beer prices or even freeze ticket prices for one season won't be happy to hear that ticket prices will be going up again. Really though that is the only bad thing that was said the whole time. I'll give the four Ricketts who were there, Tom the head man, and his two brothers and sister, credit because they sure do know what most Cubs fans want to hear. There was talk of cleaning up and renovating the bathrooms at Wrigley, widening the concourse, and over time updating the entire stadium and surrounding area. I'll believe it when I see it.
I'd expect the 2014 All-Star Game to take place at Wrigley, the renovations will all be done by then (or they will just be starting who knows) and the 100th anniversary of Wrigley can be celebrated by all of baseball.
Otherwise it doesn't look like much will change right away, Lou and Jim Hendry remain in charge. Crane Kenney somehow wormed his way into keeping his job too. Oh and the whole family loves the Cubs and are all fans and you can expect them to be at every game. We should be so happy.
Perhaps I don't sound too excited for this new regime, because until I actually see something happen I'm not going to buy into it. Cubs ownership has been lying for years, and while these might be new people they have some lofty goals that might not be as easy to reach as they might think. Time will tell, but right now I wouldn't expect anything to change.
