The White Sox decided on September 1st that Jim Thome and Jose Contreras were not going to help the White Sox make a postseason run. So they decided to dump them (and cash) off to the Dodgers and Rockies respectively for minor leaguers who may or may not e ver see the bigs.
But the White Sox trash was the Dodgers and Rockies treasure. Well wait, let's not go that far. The White Sox trash was good enough for the Dodgers and Rockies to scoop up and hope for a miracle. Ok, that's a little better.
However, both Jim Thome and Jose Contreras are on their teams 25-man playoff roster, and each has made an appearance in the 2009 postseason. Thome is 0 for 1 with a bases loaded strike out in game 1 and a walk in the 8th inning of game 2. While Contreras has put in 1 inning of work striking out 1 while giving up 2 hits, 1 of which scored 2 inherited runners. But to his credit, he did score a hold for his appearance.
So what do we make of these Ex-Sox appearances? Well not much, yet. With the Dodgers looking like they may very well advance on to the NLCS and the Rockies putting up a fight against the Phillies, there's actually an outside chance that one of these two has an impact on a critical postseason game, and maybe even a World Series game. And who knows, they actually could face each other late in a Championship Series game. Wouldn't that just make you feel special?
