I have some serious questions about how long it will take Tom Ricketts to actually put a lot of money into making the Cubs contenders. I think he knows he can get away with holding serve for a few years while he pays off some debt, and that certain non-baseball things require more financial attention than the actual product on the field (not that we don't have to put more money into the team to make it better, just that it doesn't matter what the team does).
With that in mind I have to say I'm impressed with the recent move to build two boards that block the infamous Budweiser building in left center field. The building now has a giant Horseshoe Casino ad on it, and anybody who has watched a Cubs game knows how prominent an ad space that is.
Kudos to the Cubs for not only blocking ad revenue that they don't get 100% of, but for creating new space for advertising in Wrigley Field. The Tribune had many failures as owners, and inability to max out ad potential is one of them. It must kill Ricketts inside to see all the ivy literally stealing millions from him, so its nice to see that he can create some new revenue streams. Hopefully this leads to one day building a jumbo-tron, but I think that happens a bit farther down the road.
With a high payroll, a new spring training facility, and Wrigley renovations to complete it is nice to see somebody involved with the Cubs actually finding a way to get more money in the pockets of the Cubs.
