About TCB

Talking Chicago Baseball was founded in February 2009 as a way for the authors to whine about the Cubs and White Sox. Now it is a top destination for all the latest Cubs and White Sox news and analysis. We have all the current news for both teams in Chicago and proudly do so with as much bias as possible.

In the second ever edition of Free Agent Friday the player on hand this week is... Mike Cameron.

Mike Cameron is a 36 year old outfielder from LaGrange, Georgia.  He has played the previous two seasons in Milwaukee, with experience with the Padres, Mets, Mariners, Reds, and the White Sox.  Cameron is a career .250 hitter with 265 HR's and 926 RBI over his 15 seasons.  Cameron hit .250 last season while knocking out 24 HR's and 70 RBI while posting an OBP of .342, and stealing 7 bases in 10 attempts.

Mike Cameron is expected to be a mildly attractive free agent this offseason.  Mike CameronHe is not going to be in the Bay/Holliday pool of free agent outfielders, but he certainly is not one to just overlook.  His status became a lot more clear today when the Brewers traded JJ Hardy to the Twinks for one of my least favorite players in the league, Carlos Gomez.  Gomez is a young center fielder who has skills similar to Cameron's but 13 years younger.  So it appears that Mike Cameron will certainly be on the move.

Cameron is nice fit for the Sox.  Whether they would plan on putting him in center and moving Rios to right, or vice versa, this would definitely be a nice look for the Sox.  But the price on Cameron will be driven up by some of the higher level teams who miss out of Bay or Holliday.  The Cubs are one team that are actively pursuing an outfielder, and Cameron is going to be on their radar.  Cameron has been on the Sox in the past, so he is not afraid of playing in Chicago, and he left via trade not free agency.  So the chances he comes back are actually not bad.

But, his numbers coupled with his age just doesn't fit with what the Sox are looking to do.  Why get rid of Dye if you are going to pick up a Mike Cameron? He could be a good role model and teacher to the Jordan Danks' and Jared Mitchell's of the organization, but he's just not worth the money for the Sox based on his production.  He could easily hit more than 25 HR's if he played 81 games in the Cell, but I don't know that his numbers would trump Dye's enough that the difference in price between Cameron and Dye would be  right for the Sox.

Unless the price drops dramatically, if Mike Cameron is going to sign in Chicago, it's a heck of a lot more likely it's on the North Side than on the South.

Chance Mike Cameron is on the White Sox in 2010 - 5%
