About TCB

Talking Chicago Baseball was founded in February 2009 as a way for the authors to whine about the Cubs and White Sox. Now it is a top destination for all the latest Cubs and White Sox news and analysis. We have all the current news for both teams in Chicago and proudly do so with as much bias as possible.

Winter Meetings Day 3 Roundup | Print |  E-mail

Just as we have on days one and two of the Winter Meetings we are here to recap all the goings on surrounding the Chicago ball clubs.

White Sox

  • The newest name on the Sox docket is Jack Cust. The A's outfielder's name popped up in Sox rumors this morning, and surprising was not shot down minutes after it came up.  Problem with this one is that we tried this with Swisher and we know how that worked out.  I'm not going to site here and draw every comparision between the two, but aside from the goof ball attitude these two are strikingly similar.  I loved Nick Swisher, but I'd rather not try this thing again.
  • Hideki Matsui to the White Sox is going to have to wait.  Japanese media was out in force today to try and get some answers from Kenny Williams.  Unfortunatly for both us here in the States and those in the Far East Kenny didn't have anything productive to say on the sitation.  The more I look at this, the more I think it will happen, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it either way.
  • Kenny Williams is starting to get mad at the media, bloggers, and rumormongers.  He made a public comment today claiming that the Sox were close to signing a player, and then the news went public and suddenly that deal is far from complete.  Sorry Kenny, we will stop writing about stuff people care about.  I love Kenny Williams, but he needs to relax about what's being written and just go get things done.  He always says he's not afraid of what people think, well he needs to stop worrying about what people write too.
  • Daniel Hudson might be a starter in 2010.  But he might be a reliever too.  There's really nothing more to that one.
  • Kenny says the Sox are not expected to be too active in the Rule 5 Draft tomorrow afternoon.  The Rule 5 draft is one of those things that seems useless when it happens, but there have been many a gem come out of it.  I believe Kenny in saying the Sox won't be too be active, but I wouldn't be too shocked if the Sox scoop someone up.
  • Ozzie told a Minneapolis reporter that he wants Mike Redmond to be the backup catcher to AJ.  I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be a good idea, but quickly after I read the tweet from LaVelle Neal, I saw in the news that we shouldn't read into this too deeply.  Last time I checked no one reads into anything Ozzie says to deeply, but it's always nice to be reminded.

Cubs

  • The Cubs didn't trade Milton Bradley. The only thing that will make this get done is if Jim Hendry wakes up and realizes that he needs to eat the entire 2011 deal. If that happens a Pat Burrell for Milton swap is possible, perhaps even probable.
  • Rich Harden signed with the Rangers for a $6.5 million base salary with $3.5 million in incentives. Why the Cubs couldn't offer that is beyond me, just another sign that we are in baseball money hell right now.
  • Otherwise the rest of Cubs baseball is in a continual holding pattern. Once Bradley is moved there will be a better idea of what can happen. Possibly signing Mike Cameron, possibly doing nothing.
  • Sorry there isn't more to say. Expect to see a minor league hand or two lost in the Rule 5 draft tomorrow.

Be sure to come back tomorrow for the final day of the Winter Meetings.  We'll have updates throughout the day and through the Rule 5 draft.

Also make sure to follow us on Twitter to get the most up to date news from both sides of town.  We will be following the Winter Meeting very closely all the way though until the Rule 5 draft on Thursday.  If something goes down, you can be sure to find it here.
