As we mentioned numerous times yesterday, Ryne Sandberg will be the manager of the Iowa Cubs in 2010, replacing Bobby Dickerson who took a job in the Orioles system. He has gone out and specifically said he wants to manage the Cubs one day and he is proving he means it by sticking it out on long bus rides and calling Peoria, Knoxville and now Des Moines home in recent years. I mean no disrespect to those places, it just says something to me that he is willing to be moved around like he has been from year to year.
I've made it no secret that my mouth waters at the thought of him being the Cubs manager after Lou hangs them up. Part of it is dumb, blind homerism and part of it is seeing what Ozzie has done for the Sox. I know neither is a good basis for an opinion but I'm letting emotion get the best of me on this one. Here are some quotes courtesy the Des Moines Register:
“He’ll bring a level of excitement to the field and to the stadium,” Iowa Cubs general manager Sam Bernabe said. “He’s going to bring a buzz to the park everyday."
“I’m looking forward to working more closely with the major league team, which is part of managing at this level,” Sandberg said. “There will be a number of players who either have been in the big leagues or are the next to go up, and then there’s scouting the opposition"
“It’s a win-win situation,” said Rocky Vonachen, president of the Class A Peoria Chiefs. “He’s one of the most well-liked Cubs to put on a uniform, he’s a good manager and he’s a pleasure to be around.”
And some further reading on the I-Cubs new manager:
